Hint #2 & Answers

Stuck on a clue? On this page are the second hints and answers for each clue.

Hint #2

Here are some additional hints to get you on the right path.

Clue 1

  • Next to the red post box is a rare post box with a dark royal blue colour-way. What are the two letters part of the royal cypher (or monogram) adorned with a crown?

Clue 2

  • The redacted words are Park, Moor, and Cut Horse. These are all street names mentioned on a plaque on the Two Brewers pub. What is the street’s other former name mentioned on the plaque?

Clue 3

  • There are 6 corgis and The Windsor Lady, which have 26 legs in total. If you mentally spin the cogs this number of clicks, what letters do the red indicators land on? Note: As the left cog spins clockwise, the right cog must spin anti-clockwise. The two letters from Clue 1 are “GR”.

Clue 4

  • Spot the H. Samuel Jeweller clock on a four-story building dated 1866. What letters from “H. Samuel Jeweller” does the minute hand point to at 0, 30, and 5 minutes past each hour?

Clue 5

  • 1st image = carp. 2nd image = the opposite of exits (6). 3rd image = Arms. Look for the establishment’s hanging sign on Church Street.

Clue 6

  • Spot the plaque on the floor titled ‘London’, with seven coats of arms below it. Henry VIII’s coat of arms is required to solve the clue. Each example four-quadrant crest on page 5 is paired with a four-letter name. The top-left quadrant pairs with the first letter, the top-right quadrant pairs with the second letter, and so on.

Clue 7

  • Towards the back of the locomotive is a panel with the number 3041. Add the digits together. If you pressed Shift + the total on a keyboard, what character would be typed?

Clue 8

  • Find the tiles shown in the polaroids on the tunnel’s wall. Follow the string’s path between the correct tiles to mentally draw a weapon’s identifier.

Clue 9

  • On the fourth gatepost, the first word of each line matches the words on item #5 in the inventory. What is the missing eight-letter word?

Clue 10

  • On the pavement, to the right of the George V Memorial Fountain, is a green electric box. What suspect’s name is on its side?

Clue 11

  • Just before the junction in front of The George Inn is a black sign. On the sign, you’ll find a wavy line with 18 points of interest along it, with the 17th being “The Brocas”. What does each letter convert to on the Cypher Cogs? Remember that the cogs spin in opposite directions.

Clue 12

  • If you follow the laser’s path on the “Mirror Maze Schematic”, it passes through the words, “Find a 17th century pub serving real ales and wholesome grub. Look below the golden fowl’s feet, for an oversized weapon you can remove from your sheet”. The pub it’s referring to is The Watermans Arms.

Clue 13

  • Just before the turning for Eton Square, above a set of first-floor windows is a “HOVIS” sign.

Clue 14

  • A spot-the-difference puzzle. Compare page 5’s photo with a building at the courtyard’s end (just before the junction with Common Lane). Black bricks are missing from the photo just below the building’s turret. The missing black bricks match the shape of a weapon’s identifier.

Clue 15

  • Mentally rotate all of the mirrors 90°. Rotated mirrors would bounce the laser beam in the opposite direction. What words would the laser pass through?
  • The laser’s path

    • The laser passes through the words, “Drooping elements of the wrought iron lamp symbolise an agent’s first name, but who? This agent is a mole, but are they the killer?…”

Clue 16

  • To solve this clue, you must visit the Evilcast login page. On the grid image, five of the dots are grey. Hmmm, interestingly, the grid is 9×5, and the pin is 5 digits long, which can only accept digits 1-9. Once you’ve cracked the pin, look for the <leaked></leaked> tags. What seven-letter word do they contain?

Clue 17

  • For Penny’s reply: Juliette, the truth-teller, would tell you Penny is not the accomplice, but Penny lies, so says, “Yes, she would.”

For Juliette’s reply: Penny, the lier, would tell you Juliette is not the accomplice, and Juliette tells the truth, so says, “No, she wouldn’t.”

Clue 18

  • There are six columns, each with two terms inside, one of which can be shaken, the other stirred. What are the six terms that can be shaken (or shake)? Oh, they each have a letter in brackets too!

Terminating Grid

  • The Terminating Grid metapuzzle uses letters from the Double Cross Clue Table answers to spell a sentence, revealing the murderer and weapon. C = Clue, L = Letter. So, for example, C1,L1 = the first letter from Clue 1 = G.

At a dead end? Below are the Double Cross clue table answers. Try your best not to use them, though, detective!
