Case File: Vigilantism

Hint #2 & Answers

Stuck on a clue? On this page are the second hints and answers for each clue.

Hint #2

Here are some additional hints to get you on the right path.

Clue 1

  • Look on the side of King William Ale House (on King William Avenue) for four black letters. Whose first and last name starts and ends with these four letters?

Clue 2

  • Along Narrow Quay just before the Cascade Steps and close to the King George V Memorial Fountain, spot the red sea mine with a white band around its middle. On the top section of the sea mine is a small metal panel with a suspect’s initials and age.

Clue 3

  • On Neptune’s statue is a coordinate (longitude and latitude). The clue acts like an acrostic, with the first letter of each line hinting at what you should use on page 6 to solve the clue!

Clue 4.1

  • The question marks on each poster represent a secret word contained within the listed larger words and terms. The first poster’s secret word is ‘stage’.

Clue 4.2

  • The answer to part 1 is “stage door”. On Denmark Street, on the wall next to the Hippodrome’s stage door, spot five symbols between the windows. Add some yellow to these symbols, and they’ll match up to a weapon’s marker (see the weapon markers on page 2)!

Clue 5

  • On the ground, near the flag poles outside the City Hall, are seven plaques representing seven countries. Imagine the positions of a compass’s four cardinal points when solving this clue, i.e. west=left, east=right. Follow down the riddle until you deduce which country is the answer. How’s your flag knowledge? Use the hanging flags close by if helpful!

Clue 6

  • The clue’s missing piece is on page 5 (the graffiti called ‘Bisected Evidence’). Fold the paper and join the halves together to read the complete clue.

Clue 7

  • Can’t read the back-to-font clue? Take a picture of it with your phone, and reverse the image.

Then, look for the clue’s words in bold red on the correct window bay. Between them, you’ll find two inscribed words describing a weapon’s marker (refer to the weapon markers on page 2). The words on the stained glass window are back to front when viewing them from outside the Cathedral.

Clue 8

  • Using the raised map of The National Cycle Network, mentally draw the route laid out in the clue to draw a suspect’s number.

Clue 9

  • What a load of gibberish, or is it? Try reading only the text that’s between the sets of brackets. Once deciphered, use the inscription next to John Cabot’s statue to solve the clue.

Clue 10

  • The statue was erected in 1736 by RYSBRACH. Connect the numbers and letters from this date and name (in that order) on page 5’s pieced called ‘Tracking the Mark’ (like a dot-to-dot). This will draw a symbol that represents a suspect’s alias.

Clue 11

  • On the inscription surrounding the gargoyle Lion’s head (just before the turning to Colston Parade), you’ll find Mariae De Clive’s name with a colour inside. Mix this colour with the answer to Clue 5 (i.e. blue). What colour does this create?

Clue 12

  • Read only the characters in red on the clue’s passage to reveal a question. Spot the circular inscriptions surrounding a coat of arms on the Bristol General Hospital gates. Use one of these to answer the question. Then, go to the correct website address using the answer.

Clue 13

  • The stencilled graffiti piece on page 5 called “Charlie, Mike and Victor” uses the NATO Phonetic alphabet (also available on Shepard’s security pass on the right-hand side of the page), but with the first letter of each word missing (i.e. the letter each word represents). So, what do the missing letters spell?

Clue 14

  • …Through The Gift Shop

Clue 15

  • Turn page 5 so that the word “Vigilantism” in the middle of the word cloud is the right way up. Now, read the words in red from left to right. This will reveal a hidden trivia question.

Clue 16

  • Hmm, it’s interesting that the street artist’s names all contain the letters T, A, and G, which spells tag!

Clue 17

  • To solve this clue, you must visit vigilantism.myportfolio.com and navigate to the corresponding page for Clue 17. Look at the graffiti piece on this page to find the hidden word. Maybe you just need a new perspective?

Clue 18

  • To solve this clue, you must visit vigilantism.myportfolio.com and navigate to the corresponding page for Clue 18.

Each pair of artists (one from the image and one from the list) are words part of common idioms (i.e. phrases with figurative meanings). Can you see a connection between them? The word “OVER” written in bold red is key.

Terminating Grid

  • The Terminating Grid metapuzzle uses letters from the Double Cross Clue Table answers to spell a sentence, revealing the murderer and weapon. C = Clue, L = Letter. So, for example, C1,L1 = the first letter from Clue 1 = S.

Answers

At a dead end? Below are the Double Cross clue table answers. Try your best not to use them, though, detective!

Clue 1

  • Santos Stevens

Clue 2

  • Micheal Hangelo

Clue 3

  • Crowbar (a black circle is its weapon marker, found at the coordinates 51°27’06” N, 2°35’47” W on page 6’s map)

Clue 4

  • Skateboard (orange diamond, as red mixed with yellow is orange)

Clue 5

  • Blue (not required for the Double Cross Clue Table, but you’ll need it for a later clue)

Clue 6

  • Index is the alias of Ted Dexter (see the suspect descriptions on page 2).

Clue 7

  • Knuckle Duster (red cross)

Clue 8

  • Can you see it now?

    So the answer is…

    • Shepard Scary (suspect #4)

Clue 9

  • The text inside the sets of brackets reads, “An innocent suspect’s initials are contained within the inscription’s brackets. Remove them from the case.”

    So the answer is…

    • Mah Sai Carr (the letters Msc are contained within the brackets on the inscription next to John Cabot’s statue)

Clue 10

  • Ampersand (symbolised by ‘&’), Mariae De Clive’s alias.

Clue 11

  • Spray Can (purple weapon marker, as red and blue mixed makes purple)

Clue 12

  • The clue’s hidden question (using the red bold letters) says, “on the gate, which artist’s first name is at the end of the word between 1832 and 1856?”

The word in between these dates is ERECTED, so the answer is Ted. The web address you should visit to hear the suspect’s statement is killertrails.co.uk/ted.

    So the answer is…

    • Erased (Ted’s final spoken word)

Clue 13

  • The missing letters from the stencilled words spell “Max load in tons” = “Suspect #”.

    So the answer is…

    • Rob Boss (suspect #3)

Clue 14

  • Exit (from the title, Exit Through The Gift Shop)

Clue 15

  • The hidden question is, “What is the final eight-letter word of the 2005 film title in which a vigilante in a Guy Fawkes mask overthrows a dystopian government?

    And the answer is…

    • Vendetta (from the title, V For Vendetta)

Clue 16

  • If you remove the letters t, a, and g from the listed street artist’s names, you’re left with eight letters.

    So the answer is…

    • Nonsense

Clue 17

  • ILLEGIBLE (turn it upside down and read the barcode numbers)

Clue 18

  • Each tag from the image pairs with a street artist’s name to form a common idiom, saying or phrase that contains the word OVER in the middle.

The list of pairs is as follows:
    Bend OVER Backwards
    Somewhere OVER The Rainbow
    Head OVER Heels
    Fuss OVER Nothing
    Clip OVER The Ear
    Man OVER Board
    Mind OVER Matter
    Roof OVER Your Head
    Crying OVER Spilt Milk

This leaves one remaining name from the list.

    So the answer is…

    • The Neck

Terminating Grid

  • Are you sure?

    • MOLLY CHOKED MAC WITH GREEN STAR (i.e. Canvas Wire)
