Hint #2 & Answers
Stuck on a clue? On this page are the second hints and answers for each clue.
Hint #2
Clue 1
- As you walk up the steps from St Martin’s Square to the shopping centre, look at the poem inscribed on the right-hand side starting, “Everything happens here and all at once.” The [x], [y], and [z] in the clue represent the words BENEATH THE MAPS from the poem. The words in red on the telegram say, “[x] [y] and [z] navigate to spy code”. Look under the map on page 6 for a spy code! Remove the weapon from your investigation that pairs with this number.
Clue 2
- At the top of the stairs, look to your right for the blue plaque commemorating John Freeth. The red circled numbers in the clue represent letters from the plaque. If you write them out in order, they spell MON EIGHTH FEB. Use Monty’s Calendar on page 5 to discover who he met on this day. Remove this suspect from the case.
Clue 3
- Walk along St. Martin’s Walk to find the large bronze statue. This is one of the most iconic and photographed spots in the city!
Clue 4
- The statue of Queen Victoria within Victoria Square has the span of her reign inscribed on the plinth. Queen Victoria was Queen from 1837 until her death in 1901. The red capital letters within the clue spell “IN SIZE ORDER”. Put these four numbers in ascending order to discover a weapon’s code. This weapon can be removed from your inquiries.
Clue 5
- Standing in Victoria Square, look above an entrance to the Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery for six kings of the jungle sitting in a line. The name of this animal is within a suspect’s surname.
Clue 6
The two circled numbers on the overbridge are 1911 and 1885. The hint suggests that the suspect’s first name relates to the first number, and their second name (or surname) relates to the second number.
The words in red on the telegram say, “First is stone type. Second is shape. Use item codes.” Use the Pantalone Stones sheet in your inventory on page 5 to discover the stone type with item code #1911, and the stone shape with item code #1885. This will give you a suspect’s first and second names.
Also, remember to note down the year 1885. You’ll need it for a later clue!
Clue 7
- The blue plaque commemorates J SAMPSON GAMGEE. The red letters in the clue spell the word ‘anagram’. Remove the suspect from your inquiries with a surname that is an anagram of the surgeon’s surname.
Clue 8
- The star’s title you require is ASTON VILLA TEAM OF ’82. The blue and red stars represent letters from the title, each spelling word (in number order). The red stars spell Roman numerals. There’s a decoder in your inventory on page 5. This will guide you to a day and date on Monty’s calendar on page 5. Remove the suspect he met on this day from your inquiries.
Clue 9
- The Aqueduct art installation has seven columns and five archways. 7 + 5 = 12. Which suspect’s surname ends with the 12th letter of the alphabet?
Clue 10
- Look at the signs on the island in the centre of the canal. Fazeley is 38 locks away, Wolverhampton is 3 locks away.
Clue 11
- Look for an unusual museum on Fleet Street for a clue to the riddle.
Clue 12
- The year between the two feline heads is 1928 AD. Add this number to the crystal display within the clue tile. The clue letters in red say, “flip it”. Turn the page upside down. Now the number will pair with a weapon!
Clue 13
The year you require from clue 6 is 1885. Above this year, on an obelisk within Cathedral Square, it says ‘Abu Klea’. Monty’s son is called Blake. Remove the letters in Blake’s name from the ‘Abu Klea’. This leaves you with two letters.
The red telegram letters say “periodic table element”. What element symbol in the periodic table has these two letters?
Clue 14
- Say out loud what you see on the postcard. What letters do the pictures sound like? Convert these letters to numbers using the table on the postcard. Remove the weapon from your inquiries that matches up to the four-digit code.
Clue 15
- Spell out the first letter of the eight listed materials to give you an eight-letter word.
Clue 16
- Ball Room
Terminating Grid
- The Terminating Grid metapuzzle uses letters from the Double Cross Clue Table answers to spell a sentence, revealing the murderer and weapon. C = Clue, L = Letter. So, for example, C1,L1 = the first letter from Clue 1 = I.
