Case File: The Poltergeist Heist

Hint #2 & Answers

Stuck on a clue? On this page are the second hints and answers for each clue.

Hint #2

Here are some additional hints to get you on the right path.

Clue 1

  • Look up at the large carved figures part of the timber-framed building on the right-hand side of St. Werburgh Street. The first figure is holding a giant black X, one of the weapon’s markers. You can remove this weapon from your inquiries.

Clue 2

  • Look for the bronze statue of Janya the elephant as you enter Northgate Street using the right-hand pavement. On the plaque below Janya’s feet, find the words “strange body…”. What word is at the end of this sentence? One of the racehorses (in the Betting Odds Table) contains this word. Remove the jockey that rides this horse from your inquiries.

Clue 3

  • Walk along the wall until you find King Charles Tower (it’s on the corner where it makes a 90-degree turn). Above the set of steps on the tower is a plaque. The last word on the third line is also a weapon’s name!

Clue 4

  • The year on the Millenium Festival Trail trail plaque is, of course, 2000! But what is 2000 in Roman numerals? There’s a Roman numeral decoder in your inventory. The answer is simply two alphabetical letters.

Clue 5

  • Standing under the Eastgate clock, look over Eastgate Street. The first building to your right has a crest on it, surrounded by three dogs. The Latin inscription starts with “Virtus Non St…”. What are the last four letters of the Latin inscription? These letters match an innocent suspect’s first name.

Clue 6

  • As you exit Newgate arch, there is a set of steps. A few steps down, there is a small coin-sized token on the ground featuring the English Heritage logo and a number. What five-digit number (including the digit after the decimal point) does it feature? This number matches a horse’s odds in the Betting Odds Table. Add this horse to the Betting Slip under the “Race #1” label. You don’t need to add anything to the Double Cross Clue Table for this clue.

Clue 7

  • On 12 Park Street, spot Sue Mustang-Pinto’s initials (S.M.P) on the building. On building #14 are the initials S.O.P. Which suspect has these initials? Remove this suspect from your inquiries.

Clue 8

  • As you walk along Lower Bridge St using the left-hand pavement, spot the blue circular plaque on Bridgegate. On the paragraph’s fourth line, there is a four-digit number and a letter between “IN” and “WATER” (1601 and A). These are your co-ordinates. The lowercase letters in red tell you to “use with the map”. These co-ordinates on the trail’s map will point you to a weapon’s marker. Remove this weapon from your inquiries.

Clue 9

  • A famous coffin sits vertically in one of the Gothic arches on the half-ruined Church of St. John the Baptist. The writing on the coffin matches the name of a horse in the Betting Odds Table. You can remove from your inquiries the name of the jockey who rides this horse.

Clue 10

  • On the same building as the crest you used in Clue 5, there are 12 shields in a line. The 10th shield along features a red and yellow chevron design. What suspect wears this design? Remove them from your inquiries.

Clue 11

  • As you walk along Watergate Street, spot the giant hanging key (just before The Guild). Opposite this is a building called Moray House. Add the horse’s name that contains the word “Moray” to the Betting Slip under the Race #2 label (don’t use any spaces). The red circled letters on the Betting Slip are a word jumble of a suspected weapon. The numbers on the Betting Slip’s barcode show the order of the red circled letters.

Clue 12.1

  • Locate the blue circular plaque on Stanley Palace. The required letters spell Threads (or Twitter on older versions of the trail). That’s all you need for this part of the clue.

Clue 12.2

  • For this clue you need to visit threads.net/tipstirrer (or twitter.com/tipstirrer on older versions of this trail). If you’re unable to access this page, you can see a copy of Tipstirrer’s posts here! Cross-reference the posts with the Betting Odds Table. Each post (or thread) contains a riddle in CAPITAL LETTERS describing one of the nine horses. For example, “MICHAEL J FOX AND CHRISTOPHER LLOYD PLEASANTLY RIDE TO A TIME THEY’VE BEEN TO BEFORE” is Hack To The Future.

One horse isn’t mentioned on any post. You must figure out which. Removed the jockey that rides this horse from your inquiries. Check the answers section below to see which riddle relates to which horse.

Clue 13

  • In the centre of Grosvenor Road, spot the equestrian statue. You don’t need to cross the road to solve this clue. The plaque you require starts with “Cape of good hope…” and can be seen from the pavement. Each set of coloured numbers spells a word. The number represents where in the word the letter sits. For example, The blue numbers represent the word “LOST”.

Clue 14

  • On Ye Olde King’s Head along Castle Street, spot a small white plaque with three words on it. The last word is all you need. Remove the letters “I” and “S” from the word. The remaining letters spell a five-letter word (and it’s not even an anagram!). Add this word to the Double Cross Clue Table.

Clue 15

  • The letters in red say, “fold this page up to the stiletto’s markers” (i.e. the green stars). If you fold the page up to the green dotted line between the stars, the visible words to the left of the line read, “Remove the suspect in the seventh arch from your list.” On the Art Gallery building along Bridge St (opposite the Three Old Arches), which suspect’s first name appears in the seventh ornate archway?

Clue 16

  • Go to killertrails.co.uk/fyi and listen to the words in the recording. The first letter of each word spells a three-word phrase (like an acrostic).

Clue 17

  • The words in red say, “work out the compound words and sayings”. The Compound map in your inventory contains nine crossword-like questions. The red question marks for each answer either represent the word horse or horses. For example, the answer to question 1 is “High horse”.

You don’t need to add horse(s) to the table in the centre of the map, just the other words part of the answer. Once you’ve filled in the table, the letters in the red tiles spell a weapon’s marker shape and colour. Remove this weapon from your inquiries.

Terminating Grid

  • The Terminating Grid metapuzzle uses letters from the Double Cross Clue Table answers to spell a sentence, revealing the murderer and weapon. C = Clue, L = Letter. So, for example, C1,L1 = the first letter from Clue 1 = B.

To deduce the correct suspect and weapon, you’ll need to know some basic Roman numerals (there’s a decoder in your inventory), and the map might also come in handy with finding the weapon!
